Praise for Beautifully Different
"This is a wonderful book that is both extremely personal and very informative; it touches the heart but also expands ones awareness of the great intellectual and emotional breadth and capacity of children with autism spectrum disorders. The format of pictures and biographical narrative conveys in a very strong and emotional way the wonder and the beauty of living and working with children on the spectrum. Bravo!!"
John T Walkup, Weill Cornell Medical College/New York Presbyterian Hospital
'A beautiful book! I have no other worlds to say! Just beautiful. And the photos... Unique, beautiful, lonely but always hopeful. They were exuding a vibrant and powerful sentiment. The photos in this book have the power of an artistic interpretation.' --Goodreads
Product Description
Beautifully Different is a photographic book about remarkable children with high-functioning autism who attended a programme run by Dr. Rebecca Landa at the renowned Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI) in Maryland, U.S.A., which offers some of the best early intervention therapy in the world.
As the number of diagnosed cases of autism increases exponentially, media coverage of the disorder grows more prevalent. However, the cases most often highlighted are those that are the most severe. The focus on these children may help to sound the alarm to the public, but it leaves a certain group on the sidelines. Those with high-functioning autism are rarely profiled in the media. Highly verbal, remarkably intelligent and often phenomenally gifted, they represent the ‘bright’ side of the disorder. They can show us that an autism diagnosis need not be a dead end, but rather a diversion. This book hopes to shed light on the bright side of autism.
MAKIKO has been collaborating with the founder and director of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) at KKI and Dr. Rebecca Landa, a professor of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Landa introduces the book, which contains an interview with an autism activist who reveals his experience of growing up with the diagnosis, and stories and information from contributing parents.
The photos in the book have been taken at the children’s eye level, enabling readers to see from their point of view. All of the children in the book were treated in Kennedy Krieger's Center for Autism early intervention program, that was designed by Dr. Landa, and have improved their deficits remarkably over the years, making the book an inspirational read. The children mark their milestones throughout the book, giving a rarely-seen insight into the effects of autism.

This is a beautiful and different book about children with high functioning autism. It contains information about autism along with photographs and writings about and by some autistic children. It provides a unique look at the way these children see and interact with the world. The photographs of the children are lovely and the stories about them and told by them are fascinating. I like that this book shows that while these children are different, they are also very beautiful. I received this book free to review from Netgalley and I highly recommend it.Product details

Beautifully Different Autism viewing the world through a different lens eBook MAKIKO Reviews
This is a lovely photographic book intertwined with interesting and informative text about the uniqueness of children with high functioning autism. Included with these fantastic black and white photos are the stories behind the children in the photographs, sharing their strengths, passions, unique abilities and the special way they see the world.
The photos really capture some special moments and are stunning.
As a woman with Aspergers (high functioning autism) who has also raised a son with High Functioning Autism, books of this kind always interest me. It's really lovely to see a book that is focusing very much on the positive side of children with autism, because there are a LOT of positives, it's just our world wants to conform and change these children into being put in a "normal" box, but it's a box they won't fit in, the differences are a good thing. It makes the world a more colourful place.
It's a nice book to own and share with others, would make a lovely gift book also. What a day it will be when the world embraces the millions with autism and begins to look to them for what they can truly offer the world! Because THEY DO have so much to offer, how boring is the world when we try to box people in to be this normal thing everyone talks about!
Some of the children in this book have exceptional talents, trust me, it will blow you away. My only criticism and it's a small one of this book is I think by just focusing on a few children who have exceptionally unique talents it perhaps paints a bit of an incorrect picture of the overall majority of children with HFA. There are challenges too, lots of of them, and struggles. I am sure the wonderful children in this book have those too.
It's a positive book, delightfully done, artistic and something to keep and treasure. Reading it on a did it NO justice at all, you need the book for this one to really get the best of it. I enjoyed reading it and looking at the photographs, they made me smile. Wonderful!
Beautifully Different is a wonderfully beautiful piece by MAKIKO. In black&white, she has been able to capture moments, that is still but moving seen from the eyes of the children. I have been fortunate enough to view MAKIKO's landscapes, but she has added depth to her work in this book. It is an informative book on cases with children with high functioning autism and those who are involved, but beautifully documented.
